Música Antigua
en la Villa
April 27 - June 7, 2022
Imagine a Colonial City whose rich history is brought to life by Dominicans performing music from the era of the original buildings of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Excellence • Patrimony • Community • Education
During the pandemic, those of us associated with Fundación de la Villa de Santo Domingo took stock of what was happening around the world. Concerts were cancelled. Many musical institutions closed, and some were unable to reopen.
We became more and more concerned about how we should respond to this life-changing period, and how we could make a difference in the future of music in the Dominican Republic.
We decided to focus on supporting some of the musical leaders in the Dominican Republic and on strengthening some of the institutions that are involved in teaching Dominican musicians. This June we are focused on helping the vocalists and guitarists of National Conservatory of Music and Koribe, the choral program of the Ministry of Culture. We have purchased several newly-built Renaissance and Baroque Era instruments, and we are bringing internationally teachers to the country to pass on their knowledge to this generation of Dominican musicians.
There will be online teaching sessions, recitals, masterclasses, clinician-led rehearsals, videos in historic sites, performances, and an on-line broadcast.
The visiting professionals will model what the future might look like in the Colonial City, but it will be up to Dominicans to adopt this music, to learn how to interpret it, and to create ensembles to perform it for others.
This is our vision: Early music, dating to the period of the original buildings, performed by Dominican musicians in an informed style in our own UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Colonial City.
Watch this space for more information, announcements of upcoming events, and for how you will be able to enjoy this music safely.
